Tortilla
Soup vs. Eat Drink Man Woman
Although Tortilla Soup
is a remake of Eat Drink Man Woman, there are a few differences. Obviously,
in both films, the culture is a huge difference. In Tortilla Soup, the film is
more focused on a Mexican culture. Eat Drink Man Woman is based focused on Asian
culture. The film is more focused on the lives of Martin’s daughters, while Eat
Drink Man Woman focused more on the father, Chu’s life. Tortilla Soup
had more humorous moments and was more comical than Eat Drink Man Woman.
The titles of the films
are obviously different. With the title, Tortilla Soup, we at least get
a sense about what the movie may contain. We know a little about the culture
that will be portrayed, and we know there will be food. With the title, Eat Drink
Man Woman, we get no such thing. We are left to guess who the movie
represents and the overall plot of the film.
In
both films, the daughters were influenced by Western values. Jen and Leticia
were Christian, Chien and Carmen were businesswomen, and Ning and Maribel worked
at an American style fast food restaurant. In both films, the families sat down
for Sunday dinner. This was a time for each family member to get things off
their chest and talk about their feelings. Both families valued this time. In both
films, food seems to be the tool that allows the family for an outlet to talk. It
also is used to allow the father to get closer to the young girl and her mother.
The food in each film represent their culture. There is Mexican cuisine in Tortilla
Soup and there is Asian cuisine in Eat Drink Man Woman.
I enjoyed Tortilla
Soup more than Eat Drink Man Woman. Tortilla Soup was more relatable
and enjoyable. I believe the film had more character development and emotion. Tortilla
Soup was also easier to follow along.
