I have chosen to take Reel Food and World Cinema because I had never heard of the subject before so I thought it would be interesting. When I am at home, or in my dorm, I am most likely watching a movie. I love watching movies. When I found out we would be watching movies, I was really excited. I did not initially choose this class on my own. I chose this class because my friend was also taking the class and she suggested I join her. I am glad that I did.
I assumed we would be learning about different foods that are made in different cultures, around the world. I thought we would be watching documentaries about how certain food became to be and how it is made. I am glad that the class is not what I thought it would be.
My favorite food film is Princess and the Frog. I enjoy the film mainly because it is a musical and I love songs. I also really like how it portrays people of color. The main character, Princess Tiana, is the only African American Disney princess. Many African Americans do not get the main roles in Disney princess movies. Princess Tiana was hardworking, dedicated, humble, and kind. I liked how Tiana was a chef just like her father. Tiana and her father had a connection through food. They bother enjoyed cooking and both wanted to open up a restaurant. This was their dream. I figured Princess and the Frog is a food film because it fits the criteria: food production, food preparation, food service, food consumption. The movie made me always want to try gumbo and beignets in real life. The movie is true in a sense because food does bring people together. Princess and the Frog is a great movie to watch.
